David Cope is the new Superintendent at the Southwest Research Center. Cope comes to the center in Mount Vernon from working at a local bank and more than seven years with MFA. "This job is kind of a dream come true," said Cope. "It combines two of the things I love: working for MU, my alma mater, and agriculture."
Southwest Research Center near Mount Vernon was established in 1959; the site represents various soil types in this region. Serving 22 counties, this Center addresses the main agricultural concerns of area industries including dairy, beef, forage and horticultural crop production. Currently, beef genetics, nutrition and management systems are researched, as is a pasture-based dairy operation project. Horticultural and alternative crop demonstration and research are also ongoing, including studies on elderberry and grape cultivation.
